North Devon has been blessed with better-than-forecast weather over the last week and our guests in the holiday cottages have enjoyed bursts of sunshine with blue skies. Several of the families staying with us brought bikes with them and the children have enjoyed riding around the farm and on the level play area.
Cycling is a great way to explore the area and were really lucky to have the Tarka Trail which provides traffic free, level cycling and starts in nearby Braunton. The trail follows the old railway routes of North Devon, running alongside the Taw estuary from Braunton to Barnstaple then from Barnstaple to Instow where it then follows the river Torridge to Torrington and then on to Meeth.
There are fabulous riverside and rural views along the way, lots of wildlife to see and plenty of opportunity for refreshment with good pubs and cafes en route. Fremington Quay café is a good aiming point with delicious cakes and home-cooked meals, closer to Braunton is the Braunton Inn which is very family friendly and if youre in it for the long haul then theres the Puffing Billy at Torrington. You can start your cycle at any point along the trail and for those who arent able to bring their bikes with them theres cycle hire in Braunton, Barnstaple, Fremington & Bideford.
TARKA TRAIL AUDIO TRAIL
Theres an audio trail too, look out for the yellow-topped posts along the Tarka Trail between Braunton and Meeth. Each of the 21 numbered posts has an information panel with a short summary and a QR code which can be scanned with a smartphone.
You can download these 21 audio recordings onto your phone, PC, tablet or MP3 Player. Each sound recording corresponds to a particular place on the Tarka Trail. Where ever you see a numbered post, you can learn about wildlife, history and heritage of the Tarka Trail by listening to the corresponding audio clip.
Youll find more information and a map HERE and there are Tarka Trail guides for sale in our Farm Shop.
